Now that it’s starting to get colder outside, and I’ve also picked up a job on the side to make a few extra bucks so I won’t be home as often, and I’m trying to improve on my impending wife skills, I’ve decided to try a new project; crock pot cooking.
You’d be amazed how many recipes and meals you can create using a crock pot; and they’re all usually very easy considering more often than not all you have to do is dump a few ingredients in your trusty slow cooker and go about your day. My plan is to try a new recipe every week. I’ll be sure to keep you all posted on my success.
Here’s an update for all of you Facebookers out there…
As I had mentioned before, Secret Ingredients had joined the popular age of networking and created a Facebook group which I encouraged you all to join. Well, with a little more work and investigating, we’ve moved on up and now we have our own page that you can become a fan of:
I thought I’d share this tasty snack idea with you because it’s really quick and simple to make, and I love the way it tastes.
I don’t know if this is sold in stores, but I managed to concoct it on my own in my kitchen. All you need is two slices of your favorite bread (feel free to toast it if you like), several slices of a large tomato, two slices of pepper jack cheese, and your favorite sandwich spread (I prefer Miracle Whip). Layer it all together, and you’ve got yourself a tasty tomato and cheese sandwich. The spicy kick of the pepper jack cheese is nicely cooled down by the juiciness of the tomato; and if you decide to do two layers of cheese and tomato, you end up with a pretty substantial snack.
I enjoy learning new stuff everyday and this past weekend I learned that my fiancé likes lemon bars. Who knew? Being a dessert lover in general, I figured why not go a step further and learn how to make these ooey-gooey lemony treats? Check out this clip on how to make lemon bars.
By the way, if you don’t like lemon bars, you should still watch this video. Our Chef du Jour is a little girl named Bailey. She’s 8 years old and loves to cook; I don’t think she could be cuter. I also like how Bailey magically goes into hyper-speed whenever things start to slow down a bit. Isn’t that what all kids do?
I’ve never had Cherries Jubilee before, but today would be the day for it… it’s National Cherries Jubilee Day. Check out this quick and easy recipe here, and remember, don’t set yourself on fire or singe your eyebrows. In fact just to stay on the safe side, leave the flambéing to the professionals, and enjoy the video instead.
(Beware of the misleading start. Trust me, he’s going to make the dessert.)

There’s a lot happening at Secret Ingredients. We’ve worked diligently to get our Heirloom Cookbooks back up and running in time for Christmas. We’re getting closer each week and hope to reveal them in the next month. We appreciate your understanding and patience, as this overhaul has taken much longer than expected. We promise that it’s worth the wait!
For those of you who already have Heirloom accounts with us, you will receive an email as soon as we’re up and running. We’ve changed the process to make things much better for you. Our team will be ready to help you if you have any questions about this new release. You can look forward to receiving a cookbook preview before your order goes to print. We’re also very excited to show you our new dividers. The divider themes are still the same, but your photographs will be printed directly on them!
Be sure to stay tuned to the blog in the upcoming weeks. We will be posting promo codes soon for our annual Early Bird Holiday Shoppers!
From a very early stage of our engagement, my fiancé and I decided to a go a different route with the dessert portion of the evening.
Instead of the typical traditional wedding cake, we’ve decided to go with a cheesecake wedding cake accompanied by a dessert buffet for those that don’t do cheesecake. Since we’re big fans of cheesecake, and I’m a huge fan of dessert in general, I like our multi-dessert idea.
Here’s my dilemma: I can’t seem to find a cake bakery in my area that makes cheesecake wedding cakes. They make cheesecakes and they make wedding cakes, but not cheesecake wedding cakes.
I’m looking for a cheesecake that is decorated just like a regular wedding cake with royal icing, butter cream, or fondant.
So far I’ve heard that the flavor combination of topping cheesecake with anything other than fruit is way too sweet, or just doesn’t go. I’ve also heard that it can occasionally be a bit cumbersome to decorate a cheesecake in regular cake form. Perhaps this will be one of my few bridezilla moments, but I’m not interested in those responses; I WANT MY CHEESECAKE WEDDING CAKE!
I know it can be done, I just don’t know where and by whom. If anyone out there has some input on the situation, or even suggestions regardless of your location, I’d love to hear them. And despite my previous bridezilla comment, if there are any professional bakers out there that can offer their expert opinion, I’d love to hear your take as well.
